ECOWAS reactions to claims by Niger Republic linking Nigeria to terrorism sponsorship


The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has rejected claims made by the Nigerien government that Nigeria and other member states are involved in sponsoring terrorism.


The Nigerien military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani this week made new allegations against the Federal Government of Nigeria, claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is collaborating with France to destabilize Niger Republic.


Tchiani accused the Nigerian government of receiving finance from France in exchange for allowing French military presence in a specific area of Borno State.


The Nigerien government also alleged that the Lakurawa terrorist group, allegedly aided by foreign security forces, including Nigeria’s, was responsible for the December 13, 2024 attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline.


However, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refuted these claims, expressed its support for Nigeria’s peacekeeping initiatives and condemned the allegations by Niger as unfounded.
 

The statement by ECOWAS reads in part, “The Commission stands firmly with Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states against allegations that they are sponsoring terrorism.”


ECOWAS characterized Nigeria as a “generous and magnanimous country” that has consistently advanced peace and security efforts not only in the West African subregion but across the African continent.


The Commission called on all member states to prioritize dialogue and avoid making accusations that lack credible evidence.

Nigeria House of Reps members increase campaign spending limits for presidential candidates from N5bn to N10bn

The House of Representatives has approved an increase in campaign spending limits for candidates contesting elective offices in Nigeria as part of amendments to the Electoral Act 2022.   The decision was taken during Thursday’s plenary following clause by clause consideration of a report on proposed changes to the electoral law ahead of the 2027 general elections.   Under the approved amendments, the spending ceiling for presidential candidates was raised from 5 billion naira to 10 billion naira. AFCON 2025 - Lookman, Ajayi, Osayi-Samuel arrive Super Eagles’ Cairo camp

Atalanta winger, Ademola Lookman, defenders Semi Ajayi and Bright Osayi-Samuel have arrived at the Super Eagles Renaissance Hotels base in Cairo ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.   Among the new arrivals in camp are goalkeeper Amas Obasogie, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Igoh Ogbu. They joined Francis Uzoho, Stanley Nwabali, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru in camp.   More players are expected to join the team later on Monday (today). The Super Eagles opened camp for AFCON 2025 in Cairo on Sunday.   The three-time African champions will hold their first training session tonight.
